Coffee Love

Coffee Strengths

 The Strengths of Coffee Info

Not all coffee tastes the same and coffee varies in strength. To determine the strength of a coffee, a number of things are important, including the origin of the coffee. However, perhaps the main process in producing a certain strength of coffee is the roasting of the green beans.

Roasting changes the coffee beans both physically and chemically, affecting the taste. Good quality coffee roasting requires an expert to manipulate different roasting techniques to bring out not just the strength but also the countless different flavours and aromas. All our coffee is selected and roasted by international coffee experts.

As the coffee beans loose moisture from the roasting, they start to increases in volume and decrease in weight. This causes the density of the coffee bean to alter the strength of the coffee. So the strength of coffee is determined by the length of time the beans are roasted for.

The time it takes to roast the coffee beans can vary from 2 to 30 minutes in a 180 to 280 degree roaster.

Coffee roasting takes place in large units that tumble the green beans, making sure that all the beans are equally being exposed to the heat.

Basic: How to taste coffee

Coffee Tasting def - Coffee cupping, or coffee tasting, is the practice of observing the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee.

Coffee tasting is a professional practice done by Master Tasters, but of course can also be done informally by anyone as a hobby or simply a home interest. Coffee tasting is widely practiced over the entire world and it involves observing the tastes and aromas of coffee, which can be done in many different ways and different places by different people. Very much like wine tasting, coffee tasting has a very simple procedure:

  • Inhale the coffee aroma
  • Slurp the coffee
  • Take it to the back of the tongue
Coffee is then often spit out and discarded.

Before stepping into reviewing this coffee, it would be appropriate to give some basic background information about it. Jurang is a Wholesale and Coffee Merchant that sells premium quality coffee and ensures it is sourced from sustainable and ethical sources through Fairtrade accreditation. The Jurang company sources Fair-trade certified coffee of a high quality and it is due to the fair-trade accreditation that one should straight away pay respect to this company.

The Jurang Sumatra Organic is a dark and rich Fair Trade Coffee from Indonesia. All organic sumatra are bursting with bold flavours and herbal highlights, yet are renowned for a smooth drinking coffee, the Jurang Sumatra is of no exception with its superb quality. The Jurang Sumatara Organic coffee originates from Takengyon, Gayo Highlands in North Sumatra, and with its fairtrade accreditation, you know its going to be the right fresh stuff you want. I think the best way to describe this coffee is by what is should say on the tin; a smooth, full bodied coffee that has clear herbal highlights making your mouth water even at the brewing stage.

This Jurang coffee produces deep flavours which make this fairtrade coffee have a real distinctive character. It is due to this unique delivery that really does not dissapoint that this coffee gets a 9 out of 10. It fails at no respect apart from the possibility that it does not suit all needs due to its more niche audience than the classic coffee. However, at the niche it is hands down perfect which means that this Jurang Sumatra Organic Coffee is highly recommended.

Oromo Harar Coffee Review

Oromo Harar
Coffee Review

Before stepping into reviewing this coffee, it would be appropriate to give some basic background information about it. Oromo is a company fully owned by Oromo people, an ethnic group  mainly from Ethopia (however can also be found in such places as Kenya and Somalia). Composed of around a dozen tribal groups, these peoples prefer just the term "Oromo" when speaking of themselves. The Oromo coffee company sources Fair-trade certified coffee of a high quality, directly from smallholder farmers in Ethiopia. It is due to the fair-trade accreditation that one should straight away pay respect to this company.

Now, the coffee. The Oromo Harar is a Strength 4 coffee meaning that it is quite a powerful coffee, only 1 below the strongest coffee possible to be bought. The Harar is a classic 'natural' Fairtrade coffee, meaning that there is no extra funky aspects to it, its just a straight coffee for those that are not looking for something unique. However, this coffee is far from boring, which you will find as soon as you start to brew this coffee, it really has a brilliant coffee smelling aroma that will leave your mouth watering. The best way to describe the taste of this coffee is it has that classic taste that coffee should have, however leaves you with a slight chocolaty finish that can be a real delight. It can be argued that if your looking for a classic Ethopian coffee, and with the fair-trade accreditation ofcourse, then this Oromo Harar really is one of the best to go for. It is due to that reason that I will rate this coffee, from 1-10, a 9. The reason this coffee has such a high rating is because it is not trying to be something that it is not, and therefore it fails in no respect. The only reason this coffee has not hit the 10 is because I dont think this coffee could be an all rounder, with the chocolatey finish, it may be a very little sweet for those experts that are looking for the perfect classic coffee.
